US President Donald Trump has postponed his meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping that was scheduled for the end of March in Beijing, citing a combination of insufficient preparation and the longer-than-expected US-Israeli conflict in Iran. Despite the delay, attention is increasingly turning to the degree of clarity – and certainty – this high-stakes meeting might ultimately bring for the world.
Whenever the summit does take place, it will unfold at a moment of extraordinary and growing strains within the transatlantic alliance and after a series of disruptive foreign policy moves by the Trump administration in Greenland, Venezuela, and Iran. Long-standing assumptions about global cooperation are being fundamentally challenged – including in the realms of coordinated policy on China. Against this backdrop, this high-level event will bring together leading policymakers and scholars to examine how traditional partner countries can develop shared and coordinated approaches toward China in an increasingly fragmented international landscape.
This event serves to launch the report “Allies and Partners: The Future of Relations with China,” which is the outcome of convening more than 30 scholars and practitioners from three different continents to discuss areas of possible coordination on China. This project is a collaboration among The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands, the Asia Society Center on US-China Relations, the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), and the American Academy in Berlin.
This event is held in partnership with the Asia Society Center on US-China Relations.
