Short Bio

Mechthild Anna Becker has been a research fellow in DGAP’s Center for Climate and Foreign Policy since October 2023. She conducts research and offers policy advice on climate-induced migration. Furthermore, she focuses on the conflict potentials of climate impacts and the social dimensions of climate change, including gender.

Previously, Becker worked at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) for five years. In the interdisciplinary project Brazil East Africa Peru India Climate Capacities (B-EPICC), she conducted research on climate-related migration dynamics. As of January 2021, she was responsible for capacity building and knowledge transfer activities as the project’s knowledge broker and contributed to user-oriented climate impact research. She also supported the establishment and maintenance of networks in the partner countries Ethiopia, Brazil, India, Peru, and Tanzania, including through the design of local workshops. She remains a guest researcher at PIK.

Becker completed an English-language master’s degree in modern Indian studies in Göttingen and a bachelor’s in the international degree program political management at Bremen University of Applied Sciences. During her studies, she spent two semesters abroad at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. During both stays, she received a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
