Scotland Sees Its Future in the EU

Visit of Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to the DGAP

Because of Brexit, Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is seeking a second referendum on independence. “I would predict that over the next few years Scotland will become independent and become an independent member of the EU,” the Scottish head of government said on September 18, 2019, at a press conference at the DGAP. Sturgeon’s visit to Berlin fell on the fifth anniversary of the 2014 referendum in which Scotland voted narrowly against becoming independent from the United Kingdom.

“Scotland is an outward-looking European nation with a strong relationship with Germany, and we are committed to further developing cultural, economic, and political ties,” Sturgeon said. Prior to the press conference, the leader of the nationalist SNP party exchanged views with Berlin’s political community at an off-the-record roundtable discussion.
