The Lives of Women and Girls in Afghanistan –

Feminist Foreign Policy in the Context of Crises and the Role of Media:

A conversation with Zahra Joya

Wednesday, March 15 2023, 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. (CET)

via Zoom

After the Taliban took power in Afghanistan in August 2021, many journalists had to leave the country. According to Reporters Without Borders, Afghanistan is now ranked 156th out of 180 in terms of press freedom. Human Rights Watch reports that the Taliban are targeting those working for the media, especially women.

Against this background, we are honored to host renowned Afghan journalist Zahra Joya, who will join us from her exile in London. In 2020, she founded Rukhshana Media, Afghanistan’s first feminist online news agency, with her own funds. Its aim is to address issues that are taboo in the Afghan media landscape, particularly those that affect women such as forced marriages, child marriages, rape, divorce, and menstruation.

Joya’s courageous reporting has been widely recognized. In 2022, she was named one of TIME’s Women of the Year and interviewed by Angelina Jolie. That year, she was also awarded the Change Maker Award by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and honored as one of the BBC 100 Women.

This event is the third in the series “Feminist Foreign Policy  – An Intersectional Perspective” which is jointly convened by Diplomats of Color, women@diplo, and Young DGAP. The series aims to shed light on different approaches to and perspectives on feminist foreign policy with international experts. In particular, it focuses on context-specific questions of Feminist Foreign Policy (FFP) in the Global South. Are you interested in joining the series or moderating a discussion? Then please get in touch!
