How to combat the globalization of far-right extremism?

Halle, Hanau, Kassel, and Munich, but also Utoya, Christchurch, and the storming of the Capitol - right-wing extremism and right-wing terrorism are often understood as national phenomena. However, increasingly global interlinkage (online & offline) of right-wing extremist actors and groups can be observed. The Global Terrorism Index measures a 700% increase in deaths from right-wing extremist attacks within the last 5 years. Moreover, the support of far-right actors and the dissemination of far-right narratives is used by state actors specifically to disinform and destabilize societies. Consequently, approaches to combat and contain them require a global foreign policy perspective. A response to this is needed at the multilateral level in particular because the new, transnational right-wing extremism sees itself in a global struggle against the status quo.

Key questions:

Why has there not been an adequate response from national and international institutions to the threat of right-wing extremism?
How can the fight against right-wing extremism be integrated into foreign policy?
What can be done at the international and multilateral level to counter the threat of right-wing extremist terror?

Farah Kasim, Political Affairs Officer, Counter Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED)

Diplomats of Color is a network of BPoC working at the German Federal Foreign Office. Together with the Young German Council on Foreign Relations we are hosting a monthly speaker series “Rethinking Foreign Policy” with the aim of offering a forum in which we can bring diverse perspectives together and have core actors in foreign and security policy discuss young and innovative concepts for a new foreign policy, engaging in dialogue with the next generation of foreign policy actors via digital formats.
