Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are putting the existing nuclear order in Europe into the question. For decades, Europe has successfully relied, to a large extent, on the US nuclear guarantee to deter nuclear and conventional aggression. However, Putin’s nuclear blackmailing in Ukraine and US President Donald Trump’s attitude towards NATO have raised questions about the reliability of US nuclear deterrence in the future. Under these circumstances, European nations are not only struggling to rearm their militaries; they also face uncertainties about the nuclear umbrella protecting Europe. This raises the question of alternative scenarios how to protect the Old Continent from nuclear aggression.
Together with our distinguished guests, DGAP wants to discuss the state of play regarding nuclear deterrence in Germany and what Germany can do to contribute to preventing future aggression and nuclear blackmailing.
