Upon the invitation of the United States, the first phase of the Summit for Democracy took place on December 9 and 10 with more than 100 countries in attendance. As one of his first activities as Germany’s new chancellor, Olaf Scholz also participated in this virtual event.

Against the backdrop of a decreasing number of democracies in the world, US President Biden qualified the battle for democracy as the most important challenge of the current international system. Strengthening democratic rights at home, fighting corruption, and enforcing human rights are crucial if democracy is to prevail against the onslaught from authoritarian states.

With our distinguished panelists, we will analyze the results and prospects of the summit. We will discuss how the danger of authoritarianism can be contained and what kind of concrete actions are necessary to contribute to thriving democracies in the world.

The event will be held in English and under Chatham House Rule. You will find information related to data processing at https://dgap.org/en/zoom.

Please note that the event will not be recorded.
