Keynote address by
H.E. Nicos Anastasiades
President of the Republic of Cyprus
Welcome and Chair:
Paul Freiherr von Maltzahn
Secretary General, DGAP
Owing to its 2012–13 financial crisis Cyprus was bailed out by the European Union and the IMF. The recent discovery of large natural gas resources in the Aphrodite field off Cyprus’ southern shores ought to bolster its economy. However, Turkey has not recognized Cyprus’ delimitation of exclusive economic zones with its neighbours Egypt, Lebanon and Israel. The resumption of peace talks between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots in February may have eased tensions, but the two sides are still far apart.
The keynote address and discussion will be held in English.
