Young DGAP at MSC Women Desarmenent

The German Council on Foreign Relations’ Young DGAP, Young Atlantic Treaty Association Germany, Women in International Security, and Friedrich Naumann Stiftung cordially invite you to:

The Role of Women in Promoting Security and Nuclear Disarmament

The involvement of nuclear-armed states in high-stakes confrontations – Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine as well as the deteriorating conflicts in the Middle East and Indo-Pacific – underlines the urgent need to address the impact of nuclear weapons on world politics and the measures necessary to contain the risk of nuclear escalation. While the nuclear arms control regime has suffered several setbacks in recent months and years, countries around the world are rushing to modernize their nuclear arsenals or, in the case of Iran, are suspected of pursuing nuclear weapons despite their obligations under international law. At this event, we will discuss the importance of female political leaders who have become prominent advocates for peace and security in this context and highlight the unique perspectives and strategies that they offer for nuclear disarmament and peaceful development.

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, Member of German Parliament, Chair of the Bundestag Defense Committee (FDP)

Ambassador Bonnie Denise Jenkins, Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security, US Department of State

Prof. Nicole Deitelhoff, Executive Director and Head of the Research Department, Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF)

Priyanka Chaturvedi, Member of Indian Parliament (Shiv Sena)

Julia Berghofer, Senior Policy Fellow and Project Manager for the Younger Generation Leaders Network on Euro-Atlantic Security (YGLN), European Leadership Network
