Discussion Group Russia/Eastern Partnership
The parliamentary elections on October 26, 2014 could well give the Ukrainian Parliament new democratic legitimacy and a push toward profound state reforms. Despite growing pressure from civil society and comprehensive reforms planned by President Petro Poroschenko, the results of this ongoing process have so far been limited. Political structures, overstressed by the military conflict, currently preclude a thorough overhaul of Ukraine’s administrative and political culture.
Will the newly elected parliament be able to respond to the needs for political change and economic stability? What is needed for the implementation of a broader reform agenda? Which factors characterize the relationship between political structures and civil society? To what extent are the EU and Germany capable of supporting these potential reforms?
