Visual Power Lunch 17.03. Hungarian Elections

Hungary will hold parliamentary elections on April 3, 2022, that could mark a new chapter in the country’s policies. The current government ruled by the Fidesz party of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has put Hungary at loggerheads with the EU over the rule of law and democratic standards. Its corrupt spending of EU funds led the EU Commission to withhold contribution from the recovery fund. Now, after 12 years in power, Fidesz faces a strong challenge from an alliance of six opposition parties led by Péter Márki-Zay. Given that experts in Germany and Europe are warning that these elections might not be free and fair, OSCE will be observing them with more personnel than it has ever deployed in any other EU member state.

At this Power Lunch, we will discuss the current situation in Hungary and how the upcoming elections will impact European and international politics with

Milan Nič, Senior Fellow, Alfred von Oppenheim Center for European Policy Studies, DGAP; and

Dr. András Rácz, Associate Fellow, Security and Defense Program, DGAP.

The event will be moderated by Dr. Jennifer Pernau, Member of the Steering Committee at Regionalforum München.

The online format “Power Lunch with...” enables concise and informal discussion between our members and actors in the foreign and security policy sector. You will have the opportunity to actively participate and ask questions.
