DGAP’s Research Institute regularly brings together experts and high-level guests to discuss the latest developments in foreign affairs. On March 19 and 20, the European Council will meet in Brussels. Facing a transactional world of great power competition, the EU must strengthen its competitiveness and innovation. On the day the summit begins, we will address the top agenda points, including the single market, the new EU budget (Multiannual Financial Framework), and schemes to support industrial production in Europe. With EU leaders at odds about how to develop the European market, we will discuss which path German Chancellor Friedrich Merz should choose and the specific steps he should take.
