DGAP’s Research Institute regularly brings together experts and high-level guests to discuss the latest developments in foreign affairs. Last Sunday, May 18, Poland and Romania held high-stake presidential elections. At a time when European unity is essential, Far-Right candidates challenged the balance of power in two Eastern Flank members of the EU and NATO in favor of a MAGA-style “sovereigntist” turn in domestic and foreign policy. In the final round, Romanians elected Nicusor Dan, the liberal, pro-EU mayor of Bucharest. Polish voters sent the centrist Rafał Trzaskowski and the nationalist Karol Nawrocki into a run-off in two weeks.
Together with our guests, we will discuss the implications not only for Romania and Poland but also for European politics, including the new government in Germany. We will also examine what the results mean for MAGA’s network of political allies in Europe.
