The German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) and the World Health Summit cordially invite you to a hybrid panel discussion.

The only way to address global threats is through international cooperation. For a coordinated global response to a crisis to be effective, it must be based on trust. Yet during the COVID-19 emergency, some national leaders pursued strategies that prioritized their own interests over international cooperation. This approach has fostered a lack of trust in global governance processes and obstructed collaborative efforts on shared goals such as fairly distributing vaccines around the world. The response to the pandemic has also intensified mistrust between the rest of the world and the so-called West.

In this context, our panel will discuss the critical importance of understanding global health as a central foreign policy issue and the imperative of rebuilding trust in global health governance mechanisms. The “super-election year” 2024 – during which almost half of the world’s population will cast its vote, including citizens in the EU and the United States – provides a unique opportunity to ensure that health remains a priority in foreign policy agendas around the world. Drawing perspectives from key stakeholders such as the United States, the African Union, and Germany, the discussion aims to chart a path toward stronger, more resilient global health governance.

Speakers:
Martin Bergfelder, Coordinator for the Foreign Policy Dimension of Global Health Issues, German Federal Foreign Office
Tom Bollyky, Bloomberg Chair on Global Health and Director of the Global Health Program, Council on Foreign Relations
H.E. Jean Kaseya, Director-General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention

Moderator:
Geraldine Schroeder, Member of the Board, DGAP
