Welcome and Chair:

Paul Freiherr von Maltzahn
Secretary General, DGAP

Jordan managed to weather political turbulences seen elsewhere in the Arab region. Nevertheless, the country faces a number of internal and external challenges that pose a threat for domestic stability and hence require effective responses and policies. Among others, the country struggles with the spillover effects of Syria's civil war by having to sustain a large number of refugees, an evident rise of radical Salafism, and there is an increased frustration with the government’s economic and political reforms and its perceived tolerance of corruption. On the regional level, an unpromising peace process and repercussions of the Arab uprisings constitute additional challenges that all demand a clear positioning of the kingdom.

The discussion will be held in English.
