Visual Event Mickoski 14.10.2024

Elections this spring swept Hristijan Mickoski’s conservative nationalist VMRO-DPMNE party into power in North Macedonia after it had spent seven years in opposition. With his government’s first 100 days behind him, it is an ideal time to ask the prime minister how he and his coalition partners plan to use their parliamentary majority to govern this EU accession country. Can the leadership in Skopje build on the renewed geopolitical momentum for EU enlargement while it navigates strained relations with Bulgaria and struggles to maintain positive ties with Greece – bilateral relationships that have hampered the start of North Macedonia’s EU accession talks formally opened in 2020?

As Prime Minister Mickoski is in town for the Berlin Process summit, DGAP is pleased to host him for an on-the-record public discussion. We will also explore his government’s expectations of the incoming European Commission and the EU Growth Plan, as well as his views on the regional security situation in the Western Balkans.

Welcoming remarks:

Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff, Director, DGAP

Comment:

Viola von Cramon, Former Member of European Parliament (Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance), Rapporteur on Western Balkans

Moderator:

Milan Nic, Senior Fellow in the Center for Order and Governance in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia, DGAP
