Amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, a new German government took office in December 2021. Chancellor Olaf Scholz now leads the first coalition of Social Democrats, Greens, and Liberals with ambitious priorities on climate, digitalization, and social areas. Their coalition agreement also includes points suggesting some changes to Germany’s foreign policy. EU policy, for example, will have a strong focus on climate, the rule of law and solidarity. At this event, we will discuss the impact that such a policy course will have on Germany’s strategic partnership with Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in the EU context. In particular, what will the priorities of the new German government be regarding its relationship with Poland, Czechia, and Slovakia?

Opening Remarks:

Manuel Sarrazin, Former Member of the German Bundestag (2008 to 2021) and Political Expert of the Alliance 90/The Greens on Central and Eastern Europe

Commentary:

Milan Nič, Senior Fellow at the Alfred von Oppenheim Center for European Policy Studies, German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP)

Piotr Buras, Head of Warsaw Office and Senior Policy Fellow, European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR)

Monika Sus, Fellow at the Hertie School's Centre for International Security and associate professor at the Polish Academy of Sciences
