European and Australian Trade and Investment Strategy in Asia and toward China

The EU is trying to establish a solid trade presence in Asia. Following a deal with Japan and Singapore, it is in the process of negotiating free trade agreements (FTAs) with other countries from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as well as with Australia and New Zealand. In addition, the EU is trying to conclude a bilateral investment agreement with China. Australia is part of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and has a FTA with China since 2015. Against this background, how well is the EU positioned in Asia – particularly with regard to the CPTPP? And how should the EU and Australia deal with China as a non-market economy and global competitor?
