The EU Global Gateway initiative – Challenges and Chances

In December 2021 the European Commission and the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy presented the “Global Gateway” initiative as the new European strategy to “boost smart, clean and secure links in digital, energy and transport and strengthen health, education and research systems across the world”. By 2027, the EU institutions and EU Member States plan to mobilise up to EUR 300 billion of investments in the mentioned fields. In this way, the EU aims to counter the Chinese belt and road initiative.

With our distinguished panelists, we would like to discuss the aims, conditions and possible stumbling blocks, and possible impact of this initiative. How can it improve global infrastructure development? What challenges will it face, not least in view of China’s Belt and Road Initiative? Can it become the European Union's geopolitical guide to the future?

Speakers:

Viola von Cramon-Taubadel, Member of the European Parliament, The Greens

Benjamin Hartmann, Legal and Policy Officer at the advisory service I.D.E.A. (Inspire, Debate, Engage and Accelerate Action) of the European Commission

David Ringrose, Head of Division, Connectivity & Digital Transition at European External Action Service

Moderator:

Moritz Koch, Brussels Bureau Chief of Handelsblatt
