Minister for Foreign Affairs of Finland

The new European Commission offers momentum for strengthening EU’s global role. H.E. Pekka Haavisto will share his view on how the Union should address future external challenges and how Finland is using its EU Council Presidency to contribute to more strategic and coherent external action on a European level.

H.E. Pekka Haavisto has served as Minister for Foreign Affairs in Finland since June 2019. Having a strong background in global affairs, he was the country’s Minister for International Development from 2013 to 2014 and was appointed as the Foreign Minister’s Special Representative for African Crises in 2014. Previously, he was European Union Special Representative (EUSR) in Sudan and Darfur from 2005 to 2007 and Special Advisor for the UN (ASG) in the Darfur peace process in 2007.
