Hungary has been at the center of European debates about the rule of law, democratic standards, migration, and the balance between national sovereignty and European integration. After four consecutive legislative cycles run by President Orbán’s Fidesz party, the young Tisza Party, led by Peter Magyar, is leading the election forecasts with a growing margin over Fidesz. Thus, the upcoming parliamentary election in Hungary is being followed with great attention far beyond the country’s borders. The election outcome could therefore not only reshape the country’s domestic political direction but also have noticeable effects on the EU’s ability to act and maintain cohesion. Shortly before the vote, we aim to take an analytical stock: Which political scenarios are realistic? What foreign and European policy shifts can be expected? And what consequences would they have for Hungary’s role in Europe?
The event brings together two complementary perspectives: a Hungarian foreign and security policy assessment and a European policy analysis from an institutional viewpoint. After a round of short impulses by our distinguished panelists on the guiding questions, we are going to engage in an open discussion on the topic with you, our membership base.
