Challenges to the Security and Foreign Policy
Keynote Address by
H.E. Elmar Mammadyarov
Foreign Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan considers itself a bridge between Europe and Asia, not just in geographical terms. Since independence, the country has pursued a balanced and amicable foreign policy toward both the West and Russia. In its immediate neighborhood, however, permanent peace is yet to be achieved. Dating back to the early 1990s, the territorial dispute with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region remains unresolved. The recent military confrontation in April has revealed the high risk of further escalation of what used to be called a “frozen conflict.”
Elmar Mammadyarov will set out the perspectives of a peaceful resolution of the conflict with Armenia and outline further security and foreign policy challenges to his country.
Dr. Sylke Tempel, Editor in Chief of the journal INTERNATIONALE POLITIK, will chair the discussion, which will be held in English.
