Implications for the Transatlantic Partners
Since Hillary Clinton’s article in Foreign Policy in November 2011 and the announcement of a new defense strategy in January 2012, the U.S. has been recognizing the Asia Pacific region and its bordering waters in South East Asia as the future focal point of its foreign and defense policy. Until 2020, the U.S. Navy is going to redeploy its allocation of forces between the Pacific and the Atlantic region from currently 50/50 to 60/40.
During two workshops we cover the reasons for the rebalancing and debate its security policy implications for the U.S.’ Asian and transatlantic allies alike. In a closed junior workshop in March, up-and-coming scholars have discussed new approaches and ideas with experts from think tanks and political foundations. In the course of this second, senior workshop, participants of the preceding junior workshop will present some of their results that will serve the international political experts and security practitioners as a starting point for their discussions.
