DGAP’s Research Institute regularly brings together experts and high-level guests to discuss the latest developments in foreign affairs. On May 21, we will assess the future of US-China relations in the wake of last week’s summit in Beijing between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Both leaders signaled their willingness to stabilize bilateral economic ties, solidifying a year-long trade truce that was established in October 2025. Yet significant fault lines remain unresolved: from AI competition and critical mineral export restrictions to the status of Taiwan and the war in Iran. Our guests will discuss the prospects for what both sides have framed a “relationship of strategic stability” and assess what a US-China détente means for Europe and Germany.
