Defending Against Cyberattacks from Russia Requires Investment
Share
DGAP is turning 70 – and, in light of current geopolitical upheaval, is needed more than ever.
DGAP is turning 70 – and suddenly finds itself the target of Russian attacks.
We are reaching out to you because your donation to our newly established Resilience Fund will help DGAP protect itself against cyberattacks and data theft.
In March, the Prosecutor General’s Office in Moscow declared DGAP to be an “undesirable organization” because it discredits Russia’s policies. This refers to our criticism of Russia's war of aggression and is a clear attempt at intimidation – as well as a de facto ban on our activities in Russia and a ban on travel there for our employees.
Germany’s security authorities are warning us about attacks on our data networks and targeted hacker attacks on individuals. Like most civil society organizations, we are not adequately prepared for hybrid warfare. We lack the liquid financial resources to respond with effective countermeasures. At DGAP, this is compounded by an IT infrastructure that was already in need of modernization.
We therefore urgently need to invest in our security. Our new Resilience Fund is collecting the necessary resources for this purpose. Planned measures include:
-
Implementation of automatic failover in the event of firewall failure
-
Replacement of outdated switches and server components
-
Establishment of robust processes for the digital security of scientific communication and regular training for employees on protection against cyberattacks
Transparency is very important to us – also in terms of this appeal for donations. However, we ask for your understanding that, for security reasons, we will only be able to provide detailed information on how the funds have been used once the measures have been completed.
Rest assured: we will not be intimidated.
Especially during the epochal shift that is currently roiling geopolitics, DGAP will continue to rethink and revitalize foreign policy. DGAP will address all the new questions raised by this shift while keeping Germany’s strongest network of bright foreign policy minds as intellectually independent as it has been since its founding in 1955.
But at the same time, it must invest in digital security. Please help us!
