Kaczynski’s stand-off with the EU allows him to play the traditional role of defender of an oppressed nation

On a superficial level, Poland’s dispute with the EU concerns only one government rebelling against the European rule of law. But in its crackdown on judicial independence, the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) harms not only Poles but all EU citizens — as well as foreign companies in Poland that depend on impartial application of the law.

The Western Balkans have reached a critical point on their path to EU membership, with serious democratic backsliding in some countries and people’s support for the European Union declining. At the same time, the EU is busy with its own internal problems. With the aim of raising awareness for the current developments in their region and contributing new impulses for the EU enlargement policy, think tank representatives from the Western Balkans presented their research findings in Brussels.
