Kaczynski’s stand-off with the EU allows him to play the traditional role of defender of an oppressed nation

On a superficial level, Poland’s dispute with the EU concerns only one government rebelling against the European rule of law. But in its crackdown on judicial independence, the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) harms not only Poles but all EU citizens — as well as foreign companies in Poland that depend on impartial application of the law.

What is the current state of reforms and what drives and hinders progress?

Nearly two years after the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius, Ukraine is in an extremely fragile period of transition. While the country remains mired in a conflict with Russia and the separatists in the Donbas region, a fundamental reform process has started in Kiev. Ukrainian elites have the clear goal of EU integration, but the route to a prosperous and democratic country is strewn with obstacles.
