<p>The German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), the Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM) and Transatlantic Leadership Network, with the support of the Pilecki Institute and Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS/JHU) are pleased to invite you to the expert conference</p>
<p><strong>30 Years After the Fall of the Berlin Wall: What Happened to Europe Whole and Free?</strong></p>

<p>30 years ago, the Berlin Wall fell, democracy swept through Eastern Europe, and many in the West dreamt of a united Europe at peace. 2019 also marks the twentieth anniversary of NATO’s first enlargement beyond the Iron Curtain, as well as 15 years since the EU’s Eastern enlargement and NATO’s Big Bang expansion.</p>
<p>Please join us for an afternoon at the Hotel Adlon, during which we will take a look back at this historical transition and the hopes and challenges of the time – and discuss where Europe is headed 30 years later.</p>
<p>We will explore this transformative period with the editors and authors of two new books blending memoir with scholarship. They tell the story of how and why the dangerous yet seemingly durable world order forged during the Cold War collapsed in 1989, how a new order was improvised out of its ruins, and how the vision of a Europe Whole and Free compares to current European realities.</p>
