After eight years of fighting in eastern Ukraine, Russia launched an all-out invasion of the country on February 24, leading to the first major war in Europe in decades. Normal life was put to a halt, cities have been destroyed, and millions of people have had to flee their homeland or take up arms to defend it. In this session, we will ask leading Ukrainian think tankers what the war means for their work and how they get it done under the current circumstances. What role can they play in the domestic and international political response to the war and in the documentation of war crimes? And what kind of support would they like to see from the international think tank community?

Speakers:

Yuriy Yakymenko, President, Razumkov Centre

Oleksandra Matviichuk, Head of the Board, Center for Civil Liberties

Ivan Verbytskyi, Director, Cedos

Moderators:

Laura Christoph, Junior Project Manager, Institut für Europäische Politik

Claire Luzia Leifert, Head of the Impact & Innovation Lab, German Council on Foreign Relations

The event was hosted by the Think Tank Lab, a joint initiative of DGAP and MERICS, in cooperation with IEP’s German-Ukrainian Researchers Network in the framework of the Ukraine Breakfast Debates. It was part of the OTT Conference 2022 – Think Tanks and Partnerships for Change, which took place from May 17 to 19, 2022.
