Full-time Research Fellow US Security and Defense Policy (m/f/d)

At the earliest possible date and for the duration of two years, we are looking for a Research Fellow (m/f/d) (100%, according to TVöD 13/14, dependent on personal qualifications) with a focus on “US Security and Defense Policy”.

The German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) conducts research and provides advice on current issues and trends in German foreign policy. As an independent, non-partisan and non-profit expert and member organization, it has been promoting public debate on foreign policy in Germany for over 60 years.  

The Research Fellow conducts research on and advises the Bundestag and the Federal Foreign Office and Federal Ministry of Defense on US security and defense policy. The aim is to increase the understanding of US security and defense policy in Germany to be able to assess the impact on German and European security and defense policy. The Research Fellow's range of topics essentially includes US security and defense policy; US armaments policy and projects; US policy towards NATO, the EU, Germany and regions such as the Middle East, Asia and Africa. The research provides recommendations on the orientation of German and European foreign and security policy towards the USA.

Your tasks:

  • Independent or joint implementation of projects;
  • Independent processing of policy-relevant research questions and corresponding publications on topics such as: US security and defense policy, US armaments policy; US policy towards NATO, the EU, Germany and other regions (Middle East, Asia, Africa);
  • Advising decision-makers on politics, business and civil society;
  • Media commentary and public relations;
  • Development of international partnerships and networks;
  • Content-related conceptualization and event organization;
  • In case of appropriate personal qualifications, the candidate will also be able to take on more senior-level and independent tasks.

Your skills:

  • Master’s degree in political science, international relations, US-American studies or similar fields of study;
  • Publications and research on the above-mentioned topics;
  • Relevant work experience in the United States, e.g. field research, think tank activities, practical activities or project work;
  • Experience in research-based work and policy consulting;
  • Confidence in dealing with political projects (communication, coordination, reporting, management);
  • Pronounced team spirit, high resilience and flexibility;
  • Willingness and ability to conduct independent scientific work;
  • Fluent in English, preferably at mother-tongue level, knowledge of the German language is required, if not yet sufficient, willingness of the candidate to deepen German language skills;
  • Confident text and expression skills;
  • Confident handling of MS-Office;
  • Motivation to contribute to the work of the DGAP Research Institute.
