Aleksandr Golts
Independent Expert and Military Analyst, New Times Magazine, Moscow

In March 2014, Russia’s armed forces deployed thousands of troops to the Ukrainian boarder within just a few days, leading to the swift capture and annexation of Crimea. One year later, Russia again demonstrated military speed when it deployed its forces to Syria. And recently, the large-scale “Zapad” exercise testified once more how much Russia has increased its military readiness and capabilities over the past 10 years.

Russia’s moves followed a strenuous military reform initiated by former Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov. It now provides President Putin with up to forty deployment-ready units – a sign of Moscow’s vast military superiority in the post-Soviet region. Aleksandr Golts assesses the impact these developments have on European security. He also discusses how Russia is likely to respond to new confrontations with the West in order to preserve the results of its military reform. This event presents the main findings of Alexandr Golts new book.
