Transatlantic panel discussion by the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

On May 19 Iran will hold a crucial presidential election that will determine its foreign policy approach toward Europe and the 2015 Nuclear Deal in particular. Around the same time, the US administration has to renew the sanctions waivers it agreed to under the deal, which many US policymakers would like to pull out of. The EU finds itself in an unenviable position. As a broker of the landmark agreement, which took more than a decade of negotiations, it must now shore up a deal while the main protagonists show their willingness to risk dismantling it. In the new climate of sharpened rhetoric and potentially drastic action, can Europeans show leadership on the sensitive issue of Iran’s nuclear dossier? Will the next Iranian president continue the country’s “moderation” in nuclear affairs? And will the US stick to the deal despite the many misgivings of its political class?

The discussion will be held in English and will take place under the Chatham House Rule.
