Address by

H.E. Toomas Hendrik Ilves
President of the Republic of Estonia

With the annexation of Crimea and the ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine, Europa is confronted with new challenges to it’s security architecture. In this context, a perspective from the Baltic states is of specific relevance.

We are, therefore, delighted to host President Toomas Hendrik Ilves at the DGAP.

Toomas Hendrik Ilves was re-elected President of the Republic of Estonia in 2011. Before returning to Estonia in 1993, Toomas H. Ilves had been teaching at Columbia University, New York and at the Open Education Center in Englewood, New Jersey and working at the office of Radio Free Europe in Munich, Germany. He then served his country as ambassador to the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico. From 1996 to 2002, he was Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia. From 2002 to 2004, Mr. Ilves was a Member of the Estonian Parliament; in 2004 he was elected as Member of the European Parliament, where he was vice-president of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

The discussion will be held in English and will be moderated by Dr. Harald Kindermann, Secretary General, DGAP.
