Transatlantic Roundtable

From its inception, AFRICOM was envisioned to be a new type of Unified Combatant Command, putting into action the much-touted US “whole-of-government” approach by involving stakeholders from across the US government in interdisciplinary engagement vis-à-vis Africa. Five years into its operation, we would like to use this occasion to learn how AFRICOM functions, and how it has influenced US policy in Africa. What does the “whole-of government” concept mean to those in leadership? How has it been carried out to date? Does this include a new way of approaching partnerships? What do security cooperation programs in Africa look like? How does AFRICOM measure success? To what extent does AFRICOM cooperate with European partners?

Speaker:

Ambassador Phillip Carter III
Deputy to the Commander for Civil-Military Engagement, US AFRICOM

Karsten D. Voigt will chair the discussion. The event is organized by the USA/Transatlantic Relations Program and will be held in English.
