Joint presentation by the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) and the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF)

Dr. Constanze Stelzenmüller, Senior Transatlantic Fellow with GMF, will present the findings of this year's survey, followed by a comment by Reinhard Bütikofer, MEP and co-chair, European Green Party. Dr. Henning Riecke, Head of DGAP's Transatlantic Relations Program, will moderate the discussion.

Transatlantic Trends, a comprehensive annual survey of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, assesses the overall state of transatlantic relations. The presentation of the 2013 data builds on information gathered from 2003 to 2012. Transatlantic Trends combines trend questions and questions about current political events. New questions this year focused on

  • The Snowden revelations
  • China’s role in international affairs
  • The rise of Brazil, India, and Indonesia
  • The North Korean threat
  • The conflict in Syria
  • The use of drones
  • Management of the economic crisis by the EU, national governments and Chancellor Merkel
  • The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership
  •  Immigration and integration of immigrants

Transatlantic Trends is a project of the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the Compagnia di San Paolo, with additional support from the Fundacäo Luso-Americana, Fundación BBVA, the Communitas Foundation, the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and the Open Society Foundations. Polling was conducted in the United States, twelve EU member states, Turkey, and Russia, in June 2013.
